Motorway Lessons

£23 per hour

These lessons will be tailored to individuals experience and would be expected to last a minimum of three hours

When you've just passed your test, the thought of driving on the motorway can be quite daunting. But motorways are the safest roads in the country. However, mistakes on the motorway can have serious consequences and so it is advisable to have a lesson to learn the rules of safe motorway driving first.

Here are some tips for driving on the motorway:

  • Plan well ahead.
  • Make sure you know which junctions you need.
  • Obey the speed limits (including lower limits due to congestion, weather or road works).
  • Leave a gap between you and the vehicle in front of at least 2 seconds, 4 if in bad weather.
  • Keep to the left lane, the other lanes are for overtaking.
  • Plan your journey, you must take a break of at least 15 minutes every couple of hours to keep yourself fit for the journey.
  • Tiredness can kill, and greatly increases your crash risk.

Pass Plus

Pass Plus is a training scheme for new drivers. It's much more than just a few extra lessons. In some instances (depending on individual circumstance) it may help to reduce your insurance costs. This is a specially designed course by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry.

Statistics show that new drivers are more likely to have an accident in the first two years after passing their test. This is because of their lack of driving experience.

Pass Plus builds on your skills and knowledge. It will teach you how to anticipate, plan for and deal with all kinds of hazards, to help you become a more confident driver. You can take it at any time within the first 12 month of passing your test.

The Pass Plus scheme is made up of six course modules. There is no test at the end of it - your driving will be continually assessed and you must successfully complete all the modules in the course to an Achieved or Exceeded standard:

Driving around a town

The first module has two parts. It begins with an introduction to Pass Plus, explaining the course aims and the skills and knowledge to be covered.

The second part is a practical session covering the different features of driving in a town, such as complex junctions and public transport. You'll focus on:

All weather driving

This module will be covered as much as possible in a practical session. You'll focus on correct speed, safe stopping distances, plus seeing and being seen in:

You'll also look at skidding, and:

Driving in the countryside

This module looks at the main differences between town and country driving:

It focuses especially on being aware and showing consideration for:

It also covers the correct use of a horn, coping with mud and debris on the road and how to use passing places.

Driving at night

This covers the important parts of driving at night, dawn and dusk. You'll learn about:

Driving on dual carriageways

Dual carriageways are high speed roads where the two carriageways are separated by a central reservation. You'll need to have particular skills, including:

Driving on motorways

This should be a practical session if possible. If there is no motorway nearby, it will be covered in a theory session. You should drive on a motorway as soon as you can afterwards so you can put the theory into practice. The topics covered include:

In exceptional circumstances, if a module can't be done on the road it will be covered in a theory session. In this case, the highest level you can reach is 'Achieved' as you've not been able to demonstrate the relevant practical skills.
